Would be interested to hear exactly how the provision of student accommodation is a 'perfect' example of 'Liebore' buying votes. These are the facts as I understand them: Most of the student accommodation in the borough is in the OPDC area and therefore was built under a different planning authority. Even for the areas of the borough where they determine planning applications, they don't get to decide what is applied for and they don't do their own development of student accommodation. Ealing borough hosts around 27,000 full-time students, yet only 1,247 Purpose Built Student Accommodation bed spaces were available as of the latest available figures. This puts a huge amount of pressure on local private sector rents and has led to Ealing having the highest percentage rise in rental costs. If you are seeking to 'buy' votes, students seem like a bad bet. Their propensity to vote is lower than average and they have the choice of where to register and a large proportion are likely to be able to switch to their original home location which would be more marginal electorally. Maybe I am missing something - please elucidate. |
