Freedom of information requests to ten local authorities praised by environmental and cycling charities show that many are still spending huge sums on minicabs and chauffeurs. Ealing council in west London - which declared a climate emergency in 2019, committing itself to "urgent action" to combat climate change - has spent at least £30,000 on cars in the past three years. The real amount is likely to be higher because the council declined to reveal taxis that may have been put through as "other business - expenses", arguing that the request would be too expensive to process. Ealing's climate action plan promises that the council will be carbon neutral by 2030 and says the "vast majority" of car journeys can be done by bicycle, on foot or by public transport. "A small reduction in the number of regular, short car journeys by everyone in the borough could have a huge impact on emission levels," it says.
