I don't see much difference between bins with chips for recycling and bins with chips for mixed waste. They are both bins which tend to be larger than necessary. Neither of them encourage a reduction in waste and a reduction of waste can't be achieved just by government legislation and council rules for us - we ourselves still have to put in an amount of effort. We keep looking for the 'easy' (lazy?)answer. What we don't want is our small gardens and pavements filled with overlarge wheelie bins and all the trundling of bins and lorries emptying them. Recycling always goes up when attention is paid to it - publicity, information, roadshows etc - much of which is paid for through grants. Windsor were replacing two boxes with one wheelie bin. We already only use the one in LBE for far more different items to be recycled. They don't have a food waste collection. I think our overall collection is far better but theirs has received far greater tabloid publicity. The difficulty is getting those people who don't contribute by making the most of the Council's excellent services to do something. The story about it being difficult is now wearing rather thin since so many people can and do already recycle. I loved it when the the reporter from the Gazette made an effort to find out about it and took on readers questions. Not being able to get information when you want it/not knowing how to get it stops participation. Our streets are far cleaner. It would be good if a monitoring person walked with the operatives and leafleted those buildings with obviously unsorted waste. Haven't you been behind a lorry/walked past those properties yourself and noticed? There are a lot of good resources being sent to landfill unnecessarily and at a cost to US ALL. |
