At least the traditional 30mph and upwards limits are applied consistently across the country. The 20mph limit can differ from one local authority to the next such that, for example, it changes between 30 and 20 at the top of Old Oak Lane for no apparent reason - except it’s the boundary between Ealing and Brent. Meanwhile, Hounslow seems more selective than Ealing, and we also have 20mph ‘zones’, which are different from 20mph ‘limits’ and with different criteria. I got caught out by the 20mph limit on Park Lane, which until recently was a multi-lane dual carriageway with a 40mph limit.
To be practical, I now rely on my car’s cruise control limiter, setting it to 20 and crawling along without a care or concern for the traffic piling up behind - or the e-bikes whistling past! |
