| Driving is not relaxing because of other drivers. But how much time are these drivers we encounter who are trying to 'catch up on time lost' actually losing? Can you guess? Because there is science behind it. The answer is less than one minute per mile. My commute across London is 10.5 miles. Driving at 30mph would save me nearly 10 minutes. If we compare saving this amount of time with the considerably more impactful (for want of a better word) effect on safety (stopping distance, awareness of hazards, reaction time, chance of survival/critical injury), then I think it's worth thinking very hard about. Granted it's a noticeable change, as I mentioned before, but now we have some indisputable facts, it might be better not to get intimidated by Mr Toad beeping at you because he wants to catch up on the 90 seconds he lost on the way to the supermarket, and consider leading by example instead. Added to this, as the average motor traffic speed in London is only 12mph, the 20mph limit doesn't seem such a big deal after all. |
