| Thanks Ben, I have been discussing 20mph with various people and I am finding fewer and fewer reasons to oppose them. From the point of view of a pedestrian or cyclist, any speed over 20mph is very fast. From the point of view of a driver, it feels excruciatingly slow. Some of my frequent journeys, such as Greenford Road heading back from the recycling centre seem counterintuitive at that speed. I also had to drive all the way to Kingston Hospital, a route I remember from 30 years ago, and which is now exclusively 20mph. Travelling in a bus at this speed also takes some getting used to. Taking all that into consideration, I find travelling at this speed in a motor vehicle has got me to where I need with very little, if any delay. It has become much less stressful, it is easy to spot signs and other road users, as well as becoming an evenly-paced, relaxing journey. Less of the stop-start at higher speeds, and having to constantly shift gear. Driving is safe, and heartrate is steady. We know that statistically slower speeds do not prolong overall journey times in cities, and if they do it is negligible. So why shouldn’t driving be more relaxing as a consequence? |
