I don't really know what Rupa Huq's view on stop and search is. I presume she is in favour of some restrictions on police power as most people are these days. Unfettered use by the police of these powers in the past has proved counter-productive. Currently the police do have expanded powers to stop and search and have issued a large number of section 60 orders which give them very broad discretion in stopping and search, beyond what they have had previously. Whether or not the murder of Oswaldo Carvahlo could have been prevented by more police or more police powers is very difficult to say. But aren't you just as guilty as Rupa Huq of making a political point on the issue by suggesting the latter would and the former wouldn't?
