I've just watched the film and would agree with the points that you have made. Flawed but definitely worth watching.
It was always going to suffer from comparison with Guy Hamilton's Battle of Britain film. Even though it was made in the sixties the combat scenes were better presumably because planes rather than CGI was used. The first film did give due acknowledgement to the Poles and Czechs without overstating their contribution. As the actual events were closer to the time it wasn't possible for the film to tinker with history in the way Hurricane did because they were in the living memory of those that viewed it.
Whatever the weaknesses of Hurricane, its heart is in the right place and it is an important reminder of the debt of gratitude that this country owes to the Poles in particular. To hear some people talk about them as a problem shows there is a worrying ignorance among people who claim to be patriots about their own country's history. |
