| I'm just pleased that the english team decided that their '10 campaign was to be shaped in homage to the fab '78 scotland campaign. Clearly all when well with this dedication until the last group game: - travel long way to another continent - unrealistic chance of success created in the long build up - bringing many many over-optimisitc fans - hopeless first game - manage an appalling draw against an un-rated arab team - need a fab victory with massive goal difference in the final group game Here england were let down by the group selection of Slovenia. This made their win too easy compared, say, if they'd had to play Holland. And this meant it was impossible to emulate the Archie Gemmill famous goal and it also created a continuity problem for the tribute. This meant the next game did need to be against a european power house (germany, good choice) but also that the over-hopeful home team should go home soonest. So to be the england team stuck by the referential script and got themselves sent home sharpish. Shame there was no opportunity for a 'goal to remember', but then, the team had no short, balding, bearded, stoic, passionate, under-paid player to apply to the task. But still, as an observor, it was an honour to see the dedication to the '78 tournament. |
