It is a bit of a struggle to work out exactly what the thought processes were in making the decision to attend this conference. On the face of it seems a totally crass decision with the group from Ealing jetting out just as this year's Council Tax demand hits the doormats of the people who are paying for the trip. With the business rate rise coming at the same time this looks very bad. I don't think the people who run the Council are imbeciles so they must recognise how symbolically important this trip is and how damaging to their election prospects. With 2010 looming the most convincing reason I can think for going on this conference is to get a chance to schmooze Boris Johnson and gain a GLA sinecure. This suggests that the local Conservatives believe they will lose the next election which surprises me because for all of their faults they have been better than the previous administration. The money spent going to Cannes is a tiny proportion of that blown on the tram or the Response project. |
