I walked past the Mount Close estate just to refamiliarise myself with the area. It did strike me as something of a missed opportunity  lots of open space but very little attempt made at attractive landscaping. However' I can see why residents are object, beyond the ugliness of the proposed building. It is definitely an area that could do without increased density.

On the population issue, I'm not sure how the point about older people not downsizing is particularly relevant. The issue with an ageing population across the world is presenting challenges for many countries and none have found an effective way round it that doesn't in some way boosting the working population by immigration.

The point about the London centric nature of our economy is an important one though. We are being asked to shoulder most of the burden of the need for new housing so you have the perverse situation in which the most densely populated areas are seeing the most new building. Labour were proposing to reduce this pressure by freeing up development on the Green Belt and in the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor but, even if these policies prove to be successful, they will take a long time to work.

For these reasons, I wish the objectors well and hope they succeed but I don't think they will manage to block this scheme.
