| The report by Gavin McCrone did indeed state, in 1978, that Scotland could be financially independent but it was largely predicated upon oil revenues which have declined by almost 70% since the report was written. The financial services industry, once a mainstay of Scottish revenues, is in chaos (BoS, RBS et al) so you can't look to that for support - save for taxpayers across the UK. Shipbuilding and heavy industry have largely gone, mining has gone. To resurrect them, if you wanted to at all, would take decades. An independent Scotland would need to 'hit the ground running' and I simply cannot see where the revenues will be generated. |
