| Several years ago a friend of mine who was working in a well known charity shop complained that the Manager made decisions to throw out some of the clothing that she thought was fine and that she knew that there were people wanting. In particular she mentioned that there were older ladies coming in and looking for cardigans, The Manager didn't like cardigans. I myself have been in looking for clothing to make into costumes for the school play and also for fleeces for taking camping and extra just-in-case clothing and easily washable clothing for my mother. None of which needed to be fashionable - just useful. Some shops decided to go upmarket - I remember there being a TV programme with Mary Portas doing something trying to make smarter charity shops and I used to know where the best pieces were taken to be sold and where the less good pieces were sold. There is a great mix of old and new, designer and everyday practical wear which is why charity shops are so interesting to shop in. I'm really surprised that Greenford Reuse & Recycling Centre did not have a bin for clothing and that they should suggest that you send it to landfill. Mind you, I can't say that I have found them very helpful there and the signage is awful. I also thought that the site was just leased and it was going to be taken back by the leaseholder. |
