Ben, you miss the point, even though it has been gone over again and again and again. Firstly, I think school streets are a good idea, if properly implemented. However, imagining most pupils will cycle to school is fallacy. Those who live in walkable distance, walk. Those who don’t use public transport, which is subsidised by taxpayers and, ironically, through parking charges for drivers. Bus travel for under 16s is free in London. Secondly, cycling has its place but current transport policy is far too skewed in favour of it, mainly due to the LCC activists hijacking local politics. Plenty of the infrastructure going in is poorly designed and not even used by serious cyclists. Budgets are blown on this while even basic road and pavement repairs aren’t carried out by the council. Paul’s bleat is too many cars, yet he never backs up any of his assertions with facts. The way he goes on the roads should be littered with the bodies of the dead and dying. Clearly being a keen cyclist does not improve one’s thought processes.
