I feel it is politics and the culture of politics and administration of the institutions run via political masters that are driving London into decline. LRT, TfLs predecessor was a decline management exercise and the infant TfL could not go wrong. It had no proud act to follow. Things really went wrong with the messing about by the GLC of London Transport Board and then the LT Executive, the shrinking of the Bus Network and the incursion of political types. It was certainly not perfect before, quite militaristic in culture, a hierarchy structure and yet a very good employer with above average conditions compared to public transport almost anywhere else. Coupled with outstanding levels of comfort on all it's trains and buses, architectural and design innovation , durability and quality. But it was very much in house and a holistic London employer, with a responsible management system far more than TfL have managed. It's true that a lot of large organisations are unwieldy but only those under the control of policy driven overseers seem to run away with costs and fail to deliver anywhere near the expectation. It's not the idea, it's those who hold the wrong posts for their abilities and those who cannot get on and do their jobs without wasting 90% of their time in meetings with those who have not got a clue telling them what to do. And No. I could never ever return to working in organisations with that culture. |
