The BBC were "damned if they did, damned if they didn't".

Given the 'Beebs' record of poor judgement in the past they are probably overly-reactive and while a 'bloody good slap on the wrist' would probably have sufficed they have to be seen to do something more radical.

I have worked in a large public body where every word that we wrote was open to public scrutiny. No tweets, no Facebook posts at all and every letter and release was 'sanity-checked' by at least one colleague. it slowed everything down initially but saved a lot of 'drains-up' action should anything have slipped through the net.
