Well, at £500,000 per kilometre (figures courtesy of Ealing Council's draft Local Implementation Plan)I'd say that wasn't really money well spent. There is perhaps an overestimation of exactly how many people actually cycle at any given time in London. It's not for me, I've seen what a lorry can do to someone's head and it's not pretty. The problem on Boston Road is that they have narrowed it to such an extent it is actually dangerous. It's a bus route, while ambulances regularly speed along it to and from the hospitals. A particular design flaw is found outside Boston Manor Station, where the road kinks at the brow of the hill, so most vehicles can't see what's coming the other way. I don't know if this was planned or whether the contractors messed up the work (they seemed to be starting the changes at either end and met in the middle. Either way, I doubt it actually meets modern road safety criteria (not that that has stopped (literal and physical) corner cutting on road projects in the past (go and look at some of the junctions around Winchester on the M3 to see that). Of course, the point of this thread is that there seems to be a determination to discourage car drivers from travelling to shops away from where they live. That is a very real likelihood if the Council continues to pursue the scrapping of stop and shop parking. |
