Welll I presume you are standing out on the street making an empirical record of these statistics. Other people have, at length and over many years and many different scenarios. Like everyone in the anti-car lobby you presume that public transport and cycling is the answer to all of these issues. They are not. There are many people who cannot cycle. There are many people fior whom the bus us neither convenient or practical. Small shop margins are very small. Stop and shop bays form an essential part of their potential customer base. Take them away and you cut off that revenue stream. You’d find that people probably spend more when they drive because a) they will purchase large or bulky items unsuited for carrying on the bus and b) they will tend to buy a wider range of things if the shops stock them. Again the bike/bus option may not be suited for that. The success of Pitshanger Road is largely predicated on the stop and shop model. By all means promote cycling, but don’t rely on it as the magic bullet. |
