To be fair the Clean Air act dates back to 1965 and was introduced in stages. It is hardly ever mentioned and one cannot be blamed for not existing prior to that date! Nor would any one under 50 have had any memory or experience of smogs and sulphur rich fogs- Including myself. Much as though environmental issues are screamed at us, it is not so long ago that we had a city and suburbs that had a layer of grime and soot over everything, a river that stank and was devoid of life and poisionous fogs for days on end. One 1950's large engined car would emit the same amount of CO2 as 35 modern cars and 1 truck would emit the same as 30 modern trucks. Coal gasworks were everywhere, all sorts of toxic wastes were produced right in the middle of our towns. Things have come a long way in 50 years. Such a shame that we, the west now cannot sell our cleaner technology to emerging economies. Africa is being sold highly polluting vehicles and plant of 1950's standards by the Russians, Chinese and Koreans and passing all the mistakes we have just about learned from on to them. |
