The dead fish in the main pond are the least of the park's problems. I was shocked to see how threadbare and neglected the park has become when I walked through it a couple of days ago with a friend. The first thing that I encountered was the small pond by the Mattock Lane/Ealing Green entrance which had lots of rubbish in it. Walking on further it appears that a couple of large trees had expired in the increasingly depleted rest garden (the area surrounding the sunken pond), and a section of hedge that made it into a quiet oasis had been grubbed up. Going on further into the once magnificent walled rose garden I wanted to cry at the neglected and dying roses. What is more a chunk of the middle of the rose garden had been turned into some kind of raised vegetable demonstration garden by an outfit describing itself as the Ealing Transition Team. With so many neglected and ill-used allotments could not the vegetable garden have been put somewhere more appropriate like on an allotment and the money better spent on looking after the rose. What exactly has Ealing Council got against roses? It was all very very depressing. Does anyone else feel the same way about Walpole Park? Mark. |
