"For business travellers who fly often, particularly to Europe and the far east, it hardly makes sense to fly over London then have to take a train or taxi back into it"

Why not?  It's a ridiculous argument (planes are fast, crossing London is a tiny fraction of a longhaul trip) but even if we take it at face value travellers from Ireland, South America, the US and Canada have to fly over London to get to Grain.  It's not really relevant.

What you're proposing, given that HS2 is about adding capacity on N-S rail corridors, is presumably that people wanting to get from London to Manchester schlep 20 miles the wrong way, go through tedious airport check in and security, burn fossil fuel for 45 minutes first going up and then going down, land on the edge of Manchester, stand about in baggage reclaim and then get a train into town.

I'm suggesting taking a high speed train city centre to city centre in about an hour and a eight minutes using less energy, generated in a much less polluting way.  In what conceivable way is the Grain Airport alternative better than that?  Surely if you're building multibillion pound infrastructure, build it where people want to go rather than putting it where it would cause maximum inconvenience?
