Many people only do short journeys, which means that the engine is still warming up and the catalytic converter needs even more excess fuel to get it hot and reduce catalyst poisoning. Modern cars quote low fuel consumption, but only once they have warmed up. Germany was the prime mover in getting the EU to specify catalytic converters because they had a monopoly. My car was built before catalytic converters and the engine was designed to be clean and efficient without one. |
