We had a knock at the door last winter on a really cold afternoon and got a letter from the environment agency handed to us.
We did have a coal and wood fire and I am too young to have been around when the clean air act was introduced.
We did not get a fine as we had a failed boiler and the smokeless coal would not burn in the smaller grates. (They actually checked and seemed to know that anyway)
Just got given an exemption order until the boiler was serviceable.
