It is a double edged sword but if you thing back to the times when politics did not dominate councils and they just did what councils used to do, they managed things better. But it was automatic that residents did their bit. Almost every neighbour went out and swept their pathways and the pavement outside their home, put the leaves on a pile in autumn and often poured a bucket of water and scrubbed the pavement with a yard broom. Shopkeepers did the same almost daily. The street cleaners came along and cleared the neat piles and whatever was left. It worked. It's a sort of civic pride but also a unsung form of duty. Now anyone who does this is seen as a bit weird. |
