By not voting, you end up putting in idiots with a mandate. In a ward I lived in, just 17% of the eligible electorate turned up to vote. A complete idiot one and boasted of his clear mandate ( with just a small percentage majority. Next thing is he is on every committee going. Election system needs reform. Fines if you don't vote. And a line on whether a true mandate of less than 50% vote. Two day voting and or switch to saturdays. All manifestoes to be deadlined and published the same day. A box with "None of the Above" to tick if no candidate or party is deemed votable on their manifesto. It shows the absolute apathy or absolute lack of confidence in party politics or politicians. But we are dragging our whole society down by not voting but with such dreadful choices and such systems in party politics and local authorities, fully understandable why most would not want to go near it. |
