I think we're the least productive country because UK business doesn't invest enough in modern equipment and processes that would allow their employees to work more efficiently and effectively. Low wages don't help, as it's cheaper to take on more people than it is to invest in technological improvements and training. While the UK has high levels of employment, many of these jobs are low wage or on zero hours contracts, where productivity is poor through no fault of the employees. A shorter working week would encourage business to invest in productivity improvements to sustain economic growth. |
