The powers that be have zero understanding of how the real world works, something they could have learned with a basic grasp of A level economics.

Modelling behaviour according to a pre-determined set of factors might seem the right approach if you sit in the Town Hall all day and don’t actually have to do anything that resembles real work. All very well saying if we make it more difficult for car owners to travel to Ealing Broadway they will use alternative modes of transport instead.

However, placing obstacles in front of real people simply deters them from using the services. If it’s half an hour on a bus in and the same back for a 10 minute visit it’s not workable. There is not the range of shops and services in Ealing Broadway to attract people to spend a long time there on a regular basis. You are more likely to go to Westfield, where you are more likely to find the things you want and more conveniently concentrated too.

Not everyone can walk or cycle nor do a large number of people want to. For a large proportion of people the car is the only viable option. Making it harder for them to pay for parking simply acts as a deterrent.

We’ll see the effect of this policy in due course, unless they are relying on the captive audience of Dickens Yard and Filmworks residents to make up the shortfall.
