BoJo's proposed negotiating stance with the EU is the equivalent of a man sitting on a high ledge saying 'I'll jump'. He might hope the EU will be sufficiently averse to clearing up the resulting mess that they will give him what he asks for but the problem is that our bluff has already been called on this one. Parliament has voted on it and if the prospect of leaving the EU with no deal is ever raised again there will be at least 100 Conservative MPs with sufficient integrity and love of their country to make sure it doesn't happen. No deal isn't an option and anyone who has sat in Cabinet will be more than aware of just how bad it will be. It would essentially be the UK opting out the globalised economy and the short term consequences would be a sterling crash, a spike in interest rate and multiple downgrades of our credit rating. The longer term consequences would be hard to predict but there will be a million unanticipated problems to deal with (I am not engaging in hyperbole by saying 'a million'). Johnson knows this and in a rare honest moment he will tell you that he is only trying to force the EU to offer better terms. The problem is that the terms that they have offered are the best they will give. They said from day one that they weren't prepared to budge on the Irish border and they are not going to change their mind just because a buffoon running a minority government who doesn't have the support of most of his MPs demands it. |
