Companies working for commercial gain are a huge problem to charities. British Heart Foundation reckon that they have seen a 25% drop in donations due to commercial operators costing them £3 million in lost donations. As little as 5 percent can go to the charity via a third party collection.

However, don't feel too sorry for BHF: they have an annual income of almost £200million and a lot of it is tied up in investments, equities and bonds.

Finally, think carefully what you donate to a charity shop. If it is rubbish then the shop has to dispose it at a cost which could do more harm than good to your donations.
