Whilst being aware of differing views on local wildlife (especially foxes and squirrels), I am very concerned about some tree works that are due to take place on the estate where I live, starting next week. Despite being only a couple of hundred yards from Hanger Lane gyratory, there is a lovely 'wild' area inhabited by numerous foxes and squirrels, along with other small mammals, and a wonderful variety of birds (including woodpeckers, owls, blackbirds, thrushes, doves, wood pigeons). The "major tree works" the management company has organised has been talked about for at least 10 years so it cannot be described as 'urgent' by any stretch of the imagination. Surely May must be one of the worst times of year to do this sort of work: they say they will check for nests and avoid them, but trampling the undergrowth and the noise of the chainsaws will be enough to scare off most animals and birds (perhaps permanently). Other than the residents here that care chaining ourselves to the trees (still a possibility…) is there anything else we can do? |
