One vital point missed in this thread is that it is possible that this woman did not want to press any charges. It may have been that she was:
a) too scared to because of the ramifications to HER;
b) she loves him and doesn't want HIM to suffer the consequences;
d) they were caught having sex and she lied to protect herself from the fallout;
e) it just didn't happen.

As Susan Kelly rightly points out, cautions are given after investigations and are not thrown about like confetti. They will show up on a Criminal Disclosure Check for, I think, ten years until it becomes spent. It could prevent travel to certain countries, go against you in any further contact with the police, employment, insurance and much more besides.
