Phillipa I agree with you. The behaviour of our ‘government’ at the moment is such it would have us howling with righteous indignation if it were happening in a country we thought wasn’t a model of modern democracy. The persistent refrain from the Leave camp is the referendum must be respected, regardless of any adverse impact on this country. But times have changed since June 2016, people are more aware of the issues now. Perhaps Brexit should still happen but it should be in a sensible and orderly way (even if that takes years). As Yellowhammer said, it’s the bottom sector of society that will suffer in the event of no deal, not the Rees Moggs or Johnsons of this world. When it comes to Boris Johnson it’s perhaps more important than ever to talk about his past. He was deemed by his then party leader to be unfit for public office in 2005. He’s displayed a recklessness throughout his career, yet people seem content to entrust him with delicate and detailed negotiations. He didn’t exactly excel at that at the Foreign Office. If he takes us out on a no deal then the UK will be in an enormously weak bargaining position. Far worse than we are now, despite Johnson’s claims. We will be at the mercy of every other nation we wish to trade with. And don’t expect the US to come to the rescue, despite Trump’s bluster. The Democrats are the majority in Congress and they have vowed to block any prospective deal because of the Irish border issue. If we are a true democracy then this matter has to go back to the people, either in an election or by referendum. It’s not just a matter of ‘getting Brexit done’. These are people’s lives and livelihoods being toyed with. A sensible, grown up government puts the country before its own small minded politics. |
