For what it's worth I'd back the call to get one from a charity (CPL is good) rather than a vets - all of ours have been from Wood Green Animal Shelter or similar, and have enjoyed great tabby (mongrel!) health for years.

Buying from a pet shop raises all sorts of issues, from the way they keep them (tiny cages in the window), through to what health precautions have been taken, and of course cost (£350? All ours have been about a tenner!).

Good luck and stick with the random charity tabby, even if your CPL application is unsuccessful!  They're indestructible, deserving, and lovable.  The pet shops don't need encouraging.
