I agree that organisations like NEF, the Green movement and the Transition movement are a breath of fresh air. But try and have a sensible conversation with Ealing Councillors and senior Officers about NEF, SROI and Transition topics and you'll find precious few who won't just glaze over. 'Corporate social responsibility'? The Government just announced that McDonalds have been appointed to advise the Government on food issues. Next, no doubt, we'll hear that Government control of agriculture has been outsourced to Monsanto! Bottom up grass roots movements are all well and good. However if they are not matched by top down initiatives sooner or later they will become marginalised; wither and die; or turn into sometimes violent confrontational activist mobs. |
