Besides small  shops being hit by a Tesco ( you only have to look at Northfield Avenue )
a public meeting was called by the PCA, on the prospect of Tesco moving on to the Lane. 235 people attended, 234 were against tesco. I think that most people accept that the Lane is a pleasant place to shop because of its range of small shops. If one wants chain stores it is very easy to pop into Ealing Broadway.
Also, the Co-op has an ethical policy to its suppliers, can the same be said of Tesco?
