"When I was at school rowdiness on buses was the norm. We'd run around, shout and make a general nuisance of ourselves." When I was young I had to pay my fare and I rather think most of us posters did too. Free travel is a privilege; not a right. If the cards are misused then it is proper to remove the privilege, just as "Blue Badges" are withdrawn for misuse. One might do well to remember that the regulations governing London's free travel for children were drawn up under a Labour regime, and enforced by it, so I think it's spurious to suggest that enforcement is worse, or better, under the Conservatives. "with driver only operated buses there isn't much that can be done." No, but it's called self-control. Lose it and lose one's right to free travel as well. A possible solution to the problem would be to transport schoolchildren in those nice clean white buses with darkened windows operated by Serco, a bit like Dial-a-Ride. |
