Some plants thrive in the cold, some actually need a cold spell to do what they do, garlic needs a cold spell to divide into cloves, else it would be a giant bulb. Parsnips and some other root vegetables improve after being through a frost. But yes, Daffodils are generally later and shorter this year and it is due to the long winter we had, I was looking forward to that global warming thing to grow some more exotic plants, but that seems to have been forgotten about now and all we got left with is boring climate change. By the way, if your daffs are coming up "blind" ie have leaves but no flower, its generally a sign that the soil needs more nutrients. Assuming this cold spell stops, what are the gardeners amongst us growing this year? |
