We've a bifurcation of the work place. The top earners can push their children through the best education and their future is rosy - the best universities, the best job opportunities, the biggest salaries and bonuses. Worse, the service and finance sectors are where all the big salaries are so all this (so called) talent flows into these jobs - leaving the real value generating industries with a also-ran candidates. On the other side, the children of low earners get state schools, a purposeless view of education, a McJob set of work opportunities, a state funded life outside work, or at best poor wages and no bonuses. We are living in the post Thatcher, post new Labour world of conflicting ideologies and no real direction for our society. So what do we do - we bitch about a few big bonuses as if stopping these would solve the bigger problem. We are as dumb and reactionary the newspapers and politicians want us to be. |
