No they gave us the most widespread world standard gauge - not just for tramways but for proper high speed interurban trains in other countries where there's the gumption to provide such, as well as the slower intercity and local trains we have here. And anyway why 2/3 of a totally obsolete gauge which only ever existed in parts of Southern England and Southeast Wales? (unlike the originator of standard gauge Marc Brunel's son never worked anywhere else - perhaps he should have got out more). |
