Tomatoes are best left to ripen on the plant and picked when red. 
When they are green they are not ripe.

Try again next year and remember to pick them when they have changed colour from green to dark red.

I grew pumpkins for the firsttime this year and the plant starts withering before the fruit is ripe, but they are now all a lovely orange colour.
