An angry insistence on simplistic and absolutist ideas is not confined to the left or right but the extremes of both. We live in an age where a significant number of stupid people have been given a platform to air their views and have found a sufficient number equally dim people to agree with them giving them a sense of camaraderie. This gives them a tribal loyalty to their idiocy and occurs on both end of the political spectrum.
This 'passionate intensity' of the worst is not a new thing but is much more prevalent in an age of social media.
