The circumstances might be different, but these cycle lanes remind me of the Zil lanes in the one time Soviet capital of Hitler's one time ally in the Moscow Kremlin (ref. 23/08/1939). They were just reserved for the use of the top dog Soviet nomenklatura, to be chauffeured about in their Zil and Chaika limousines, and for their security and emergeny services. Although bicycles are not Zil limousines, people like Paul James seem to want to have that exclusiveness for themselves, just like the Soviet top dog nomenklatura had with their Zil lanes. Probably, until the Soviet Empire of Hitler's one time ally in the Kremlin fell apart, these Zil lanes were better maintained than the other parts of the road were. These other parts of the road, and other roads had to used by the masses of pleb proletariat that had to serve that nomenklatura. |
