From what I have seen traveller treat their children with the same sort of benign neglect that used to be the norm with parents in the seventies and eighties. In neither case does that mean there is a lack of love and the jury is out on which approach is better - this way or the currently more widely accepted method of helicopter parenting.

I would imagine the travellers are highly suspicious of visits from the local authorities regarding their children and ironically that is more likely to move them on than an eviction notice.
