An absolute tragedy for the people of Scunthorpe. I don't see what else the government could have done apart from providing the lifeline they have to enable it to continue to trade. Nationalisation (Corbyn's wish) would only take a loss-making company back into public ownership. Successive owners have never been able to make the Scunthorpe site profitable over the last ten years. China produced more steel in 2018 than the UK has produced since records began. Any thoughts or do we just throw in the towel and admit that we are no longer a heavy engineering nation? |
